Hey Colin you mentioned front loading with various sulfate fertilizers to see how that test goes. I just did that myself, I’ll explain my results. I just put in a new plot back in June/July. My original soil test showed 16ppm S in my low pH soil and 23ppm in my high pH soil. Here were the sulfate fertilizers I added back in summer: magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, cobalt sulfate, manganese sulfate. In addition to this I added elemental sulfur to the high pH soils. After 4 months (rainy summers here in Florida) and growing a cover crop of various heat tolerant crops I retested. My low pH soil had 15ppm sulphur and my high pH soil had 22ppm in one section while the other with a higher dose of elemental sulfur had 53ppm. So in my case it appears that all of the sulfate I applied was used up or leached away in just 4 months. This wasn’t a very rainy summer either though we still got plenty. As for the amounts I added of each you can see that in my market garden journal post. The amounts applied were quite high. In the future Im thinking of using smaller more frequent applications of sulfates. Of course if my test with DE and elemental sulfur gives me good data then that might be an option. I would just have to figure out the ratio and I have to see if the DE adds to much Calcium as that could be a problem for me. I’ll know more in future tests.
