Thanks for your thoughts Johnathon. I understand what you’re saying. I made this thread to get some light on an issue I couldn’t understand. I do get the balance aspect. How people use the test in a practical manner wasn’t really at the top of my reasons in posting the thread. When most people see a CEC of 12-15 on a soil test I don’t think they would typically think the soil is a Sandy soil when it is in this case. Thus I was trying to understand why my soil has the ability to hold so much calcium. Why is the CEC going up so much by adding minerals when CEC is not supposed to increase by a large amount by adding minerals but in my case it has increased a lot. It may not be extremely important but I wanted to understand what was going on. In my case I don’t have K or Mg reserves in my soil so what I see on a CEC test is what i got. In my context it makes this type of test a little more important than someone who has large reserves to replace that which is used. Now I believe I understand that having a good fungal network can increase the holding capacity of a Sandy soil. I don’t know how this effects all the minerals but I can see that it greatly increases the capacity to hold calcium. Unfortunately because of ignorance in the past it’s out of balance in my case. Some crops can have very large draws on nutrients, particularly K. That can be a challenge on Sandy soil with low capacity. I’m trying to learn how to manage this mineral in my context. Knowing what I know now I won’t make the mistake of over adding calcium in my new plots that aren’t messed up. Over time I will learn what can be done with the areas that are high in calcium. Can the K levels be brought up to balance or is there no room for K with all this Calcium? In these fruit tree areas I’m starting an experiment where I will add small amounts of K on the surface, monthly. I’ll see how the trees respond and in a year I’ll see if K levels are coming up. I already know from experience to high of application will lead to much of it leaching. Just trying to learn.
