Hello Darren, the 5th section called “new” on that soil test is part of the 5000 sqft. It’s a section with higher pH and slightly lower organic matter. Because all of this soil was trucked in and each load was either low pH high organic matter or high pH medium organic matter my garden is like a checker board depending on what load arrived next. None of the areas are above 7.0ph anymore and in fact I lowered a little to much but I believe that will be fixed when I deep (8″) till it in the next couple of weeks.
I’m sure there was a good amount of K tied up in the biomass, but I put most of that mass in the walk ways because it’s too much for my tiller to handle. I would love to get to the point of having no foliars or amending to do but because I have no natural K reserves or Mg I will likely have to manage this on an ongoing basis as needed. Most of my inputs should be pretty minimal at this point. I’m mostly working on biology now. I have a few problem areas in the plot in the lower organic matter areas that I’m trying to figure out the issue. Probably 800sqft of the 5000 is doing very poor. Might be from my over amending but why only a small area has the problem? The Daikon radish in this poor area barely grew 6 inches in nearly 3 months. Lots of yellowing on old leaves, very stunted. I’ll get some pictures soon. I had a soil test on part of the bad area back in September and saw nothing drastically different compared to the other areas. If I urinate on the plants directly they get happy and start growing for awhile, hehe. So it seems to me like this area is not getting nitrogen to plants. One of my goals going forward is to improve this area. The area is more like sections or spots, as it’s kind of checkerboard like everything else. The organic matter is lower in these bad spots but still tests 3.5%. I’m sure I will get it turned around.
As for the base saturation target I’m pretty much just using the recommended levels Logan has. I’m not planning on being to detailed in that area as most of the plot is pretty close except the areas I over sulfured but I believe that will change when I till it in as it should neutralize some of that hydrogen seeing most of it is the top 4 inches, below that the pH is still above 7, so mixing the two should get me close in that area on base saturation.
