I have spent some time with lactic acid bacilla and milk preps in disease control. One mechanism seems not to be the bacteria as such, but fragments of milk protein that bind iron. Iron is absolutely crucial for the growth of pathogens. Each of them requires a certain iron-level. If this is sequestered the pathogen will find it hard to thrive. So trial also milk digestates!
