Biochar Production & Application
1) Do you produce it yourself? If so, how? Or do you purchase it? If so, where? Local producers/dealers or regional/national distributors?
We produce it ourselves. It’s a pretty crude methodology though. I cut the top out of an old 500g diesel tank and we just get a fire started and continue to load wood on top of the coals, and at the end…

The broadleaf herbicide program would probably need to be changed to accommodate the clover. First year it shouldn’t interfere with harvest but the second year it might need to be terminated or at least suppressed chemically. I…

Genetics and nutrient density, disease resistence
There is a formula for how fast a population can change:
Genetic diversity of starting population
x
intensity of selection pressure
x
size of population.
However, the intensity factor has something like a bell curve– if you get too intense without a big enough population size, you’ll lose genetic diversity and set things back.
High diversity…

I’m really enjoying this conversation thanks Julia. Do you know how many generations it takes for a plant to change its expression be it environmental low input system and epigenetic? I keep sorta coming across the 3rd generation but that’s mainly animal behaviour and possibly some human health stuff.

I am looking for ideas on a legume cover crop that can be seeded with spring wheat that will stay below the canopy of the wheat so it will not interfere with harvest. We get most of our moisture in the winter and early spring. One option is to terminate the cover crop in the spring prior to planting spring grain. Another option is to cut…
