Your logic regarding velvetleaf at low Eh levels seems correct to me.

I have those books, I have found them to be very useful to enter the concept of weeds as indicators. I would like now to have some other information, regading the scientific aspects of that art. I mean things like the Eh-pH soil system.

Yes, grasses (Echinochloa crus-galli, Setaria sp.) are very healthy, and so does quack grass in some spots. I find them the most in lower areas at the fields heads, where machinery turns and compaction is more severe, increasing at the same time the swinging between wet and dry conditions .The use of power harrow seems to help them. I have that book and I think it is a very good one. What puzzles me regarding velvetleaf is the varied situations where it becomes a problem.
Few examples that I have experinced recently (organic):
10 acres silty-loam soil, last year of convetional farming was 2020
