I have done some internet research but I did not found useful information. The burgundy mixture (copper sulfate + sodium carbonate) was sprayed on vineyards, but I think not nowadays. My doubt is about the possible formation of copper carbonate that in my understanding has a low solubility in water and thus, maybe, a lower efficacity against…

Mineral chelation for plant uptake
I’ve been puzzling over the term ‘chelation’ as it relates to soil/plant nutrition. I hear about glyphosate and other herbicides chelating minerals and it’s always inferred that this is a bid thing i.e. they become unavailable for plant uptake or unusable by the plant. I also hear about humic products chelating minerals to convert them to…

Preferred soil prep protocols for starting new fruit tree row?
Thank you for your thoughts. I have encountered some planting situations where the field was eroded and degraded such that few cover crops would take off without a lot of help. I’ve only used winter rye in high fertility situations but I understand that it is supposed to respond even on poor soils. I envision starting with solo winter rye,…

Preferred soil prep protocols for starting new fruit tree row?
1) See if you have a compaction layer. Can use a penetrometer or just a soil probe/rod. If so, that should probably be addressed before planting. Implement or cover crop.
2) I would consider doing a basic soil analysis, although I know opinions differ on the value of that information. I’d do a Mehlich 3 and OM/Carbon analysis as a benchmark.…

Liming effects on soil microbiology
I am working some land with low pH too. I applied lime that’s finely ground. The company calls it micronized. It’s supposed to be available more quickly. The sales rep claimed they had done trials where they were able to reduce rates by half. I haven’t seen any papers though.
