Thats interesting. We like growing rye as well, but yields tend to suffer for us after corn. Sometimes a fertility problem, but also it just tends to be late planted. But I’m glad to hear it’s working for him. I think something down this line is what I need to do more of to produce more feed.

This is a bit different but Gary Zimmer has been doing a 2-year corn-cereal rye rotation (organic) and has been happy with it. You can either frost seed alfalfa/clover into the rye or follow it with a multispecies cover after harvest. If you dig around online you can find articles with the details.

I live in Iowa and the standard crop rotation is corn and soybeans. We have been doing some small grains mixed in as well, but are not doing everything in a 3 year rotation. Last year I had good success with an oat crop, under-seeded with clover which I plan to plant corn into next spring. This got me thinking about the viability of an oat…

What seems to be the problem with Jumping worms – Amynthas species?
We breed the A.corticis and A.gracilis varieties and find that they do a remarkable job of converting high carbon organic matter into humus.
