Missed prime time, but intentional inoculation of red dent corn with ustilago maydis was successful! I didn’t expect it to work in our arid climate, so now I know I can try to replicate it on scale next year!

I have also had this experience, but more often with root drench for transplants. Some plants grow really well and others never quite seem to make a connection with soil and the roots don’t develope well. On the other hand I have had really good experience with seeds (maize and squashes) soak in compost extract + humic + seaweed + manganese…

Thank you Andre for your comments. I have been working on increasing Ca with gypsum, which I hope will improve the S as well. A soil test shows that Ca is high in comparison to Mg. (Ca:Mg = 76%:10%). My main concern is the Mn, as this can regulate K which in turn can regulate Ca, but I am not sure in which form I can best introduce Mn (Mn EDTA…

I have seen a field of wheat sown two weeks ago. The kernels where treated with a fungal rich compost extract. Now, it looks like the plot with not-treated kernels have a better emergence than the treatet plots.

It seems like a Ca deficiency problem – that causes the splitting. S, Mn and Mg are short too. Without a soil test it is impossible to draw conclusions. Ammonium is quite high but I might be due to delay in delivery of the sample
