WORLD AG NEWS BRIEF

Regenerative farmers eliminate fertilizers and seed

At Brookshire Farm near Abbeville, Louisiana, the Blanchet family has spent decades integrating livestock, pasture recovery and direct food sales. Their 240-acre operation produces grass-finished beef and works with partner farms offering chicken and pork.

More movement, more recovery

The grazing system uses frequent livestock moves followed by substantial rest. This concentrates grazing and manure for a short period, then gives plants time to rebuild leaf area and roots. The family says the approach has improved water management, helped interrupt parasite cycles and roughly doubled carrying capacity.

Over time, the farm stopped routine applications of fertiliser and lime and no longer ploughs fields. It also moved away from regularly buying cover-crop seed, relying more on plants already present in the pasture seed bank. Those changes reduced purchased inputs and soil disturbance.

The business changed with the land

The family began moving toward grass-finished beef in 2003 and public sales followed in 2005. Direct marketing allows customers to buy a production story as well as meat, but it requires processing access, inventory planning, communication and a dependable customer base.

This is one farm’s experience rather than a formula. Louisiana rainfall, soils and growing season differ from other regions, and eliminating an input without replacing the function it served can create deficiencies. Soil tests, forage assessment, animal performance and financial records are needed to confirm that a system remains balanced.

The useful lesson is the sequence: improve grazing management, observe pasture response, reduce inputs carefully and keep measuring. Regeneration becomes economically meaningful when better ecological function lowers cost while maintaining animal health and production.
