I certainly stand to be corrected, but this is the methodology we employ on our operation for nutrient densified pedigreed seed production. We aren’t organic, more of a hybrid concept so we have a bit more latitude for our adjuncts and interventions. We use a liquid in-furrow program that contains low-salt N,P,K,S, plus B, Mn, Zn, Cu, Fe, Mo, Humic Acid, along with biology to accelerate nutrient uptake and availability. Our belief is that the seedling should lack for nothing, so by providing this buffet right in the seed row, every seedling gets covered. This is critical as new research is showing that the yield potential of the plant is determined as early as the 2-3 leaf stage. So by doing it this way we have the first critical base covered. Next critical phase for us is a foliar application at the 3leaf -1 tiller stage with a melted urea + multi- nutrient composition with elevated levels of B and Ca, as they don’t move well in the plant. Just prior to heading we will apply the same recipe, this time with elevated levels of Cu for mitigating fungal infections such as ergot. If you want to bump protein, you can apply another application of melted urea at the milk/ soft dough stage.

As I said at the outset, I am still learning with my 2 boys about the best way to empower the plant for total health/ nutrition, so I welcome any comments that we might have neglected or overlooked on this journey.

    Cheers,
