    Little by little I would remove the original fabric so the vine roots can breathe better.

    The best weed control is mowing. Remember, any plant is adding exudates to the soil which feeds the microbes and fixes nutrients for the vines.

    Low growing perennial cover crops like Dutch white clover is a great idea; it will smother weeds and add exudates. No bare soil under the vines.

    If you are concerned about pesticide residue then add archaea microbes. They will eat any pesticide in 30 min. ( obio.com … use the product called “Mighty Mike”. It rocks. Eats paint, motor oil, pesticides, plastic, etc. Archaea microbes kick ass.)
