End of week 5 update on cover crop. Everything but the sorghum Sudan grass is flowering (going to seed). This seems quite early to me based on what I’m reading on these varieties. The millet was going to seed nearly two weeks ago. I have to do some research on what might be the cause and if this is bad or good. The sorghum and Sunn hemp were 4-6′ while the sunflower is mostly 3-4′ tall. I just cut the sorghum and Sunn hemp back a foot or two. Curious if the Sunn hemp will just continue to push flowers or go back to growing. Let a little more light get to the sunflower although it’s mostly pushing it’s flower now. I did some brix readings on the surghum (5.6) and the Sunn hemp (7.1) a couple of days ago. It was sunny and almost 100* around 5 pm or so when I did it. Was planning on starting foliar spraying but I may be to late now that I’m seeing all these flowers pushing.

Pulled a Sunn hemp plant in the first two pics to check for nodules. Also pulled a wild weed that fixes nitrogen. The weed had a lot of nodules on it compared to the sunn hemp. You can see the pink/red color on the Sunn hemp and I cut a nodule in half on the weed and it was very red. Might save some seed from this kind of weed. I put a pick of the weed as I don’t know what it’s called. Also posted some pics of the cover crop after I trimmed it back.
