I believe that many including John K has said that most soils can only absorb about 500 lbs of gypsum per acre per application with a residual release of about 30-45 days or so. Applying a lot at one time can cause a lot of problems chemically (I’ve done it). Also, in sandy soils, you are at high risk of losing much of what you put down. Lime, on the other hand, takes a really long time to break down, especially if you are in an arid environment like I am. A lot of the ACRES USA type consultants and companies often recommend lime be used even in alkaline soils when total Ca is deficient on a soil test. I’ve never seen it work and often have seen it cause disasters of epic proportion. But small doses of high-quality liquid Calcium can work, not in a soil-balancing or pound-replacing way, but in a crop-feeding way. I generally think that the pursuit of “ideally” balanced soils is a wasted endeavor paved with empty wallets and broken promises.
