I realize this is very old, but I’m going to comment anyway because I can’t help myself:)
I agree with you that no till vegetable production on a medium to large scale should be pursued, but is difficult. It seems there are many growers who have figured it out on a smaller scale, I don’t know many or any doing it on a larger acre basis.
Having said that, the mower/swather idea mentioned by John interests me. I wouldn’t mind knowing more.
Here is something that I have been working on, but that is still more conceptual than a proven technique. Occultation using landscape fabric (I am going to try attaching some photos to this, though it is only my second post ever on here, so we’ll see if it actually happens). With crimping and with mowing to a lesser degree timing termination is very important and often in a narrow window. Timing is further complicated if a diverse cover is used because the plants don’t synchronize their various windows for termination. Then, that termination window doesn’t work well with vegetables because they are not planted all at the same time. That is why I’ve been playing with landscape fabric.
