I have finally had a look at the roots – yes, they have lost the root hairs and the gravitropic response. As J. White says – no endophytes, no gravitropism.
This makes me think about heavy, waterlogging rainfalls that lower the bulk water osmolarity fast. If there is no rhizosheath, the same could happen in soil.
