It is my understanding from information about the soil CEC that I read in Michael Astera’s book “The Ideal Soil v2.0” and Steve Solomon’s book “The Intelligent Gardner” that the binding capacity of every mineral cation is not the same. Some minerals have a stronger binding attraction. These minerals are able to displace other minerals at a CEC binding point because that mineral cation has a stronger attraction than the other mineral cation. Because of this applying too much of some minerals can cause a significant loss of other minerals which have a weaker attraction. The ratios of minerals need to be kept in balance to avoid the loss of some of the minerals with weaker CEC binding capacity. Mineral swaps occur frequently at a CEC binding point. It is my understanding that plants usually swap an H molecule at the CEC binding point to release the mineral that they want from the binding point.
