I have seen incredible results with heirloom “hybrids” – when I had bastards of two varieties, I understood then how hybrid breeding came into existence. Very often outstanding taste and esp. sweetness + tender texture and vigor. So if the modern variety was a hybrid, you might also look at hybrid vigor.
