    Hi Jason, I think Andrew’s method of having two plots and planting covers the year before is the best if you have the land base. However, if not, I would address your weed issues as John mentioned with oats as they will accumulate the nitrogen, which is why you are seeing pigweed. The other idea I have seen is to plant a radish, also an nitrogen accumulator, or similar plant in a row that will winter kill and be black in the spring so that the ground warms up faster. The rest of the area you can use a diverse mix.

    From what I have seen and read it makes more sense to have more diversity of roots and plants than worry about growth above. Therefore, you want to choose plants from grass, broadleaf, legume, and chenopod (beet) families.
