I do not know about your soils – here the root definitely quits the nice and structured zone in the direct seeded ones and it also stops growth, shrinks and often begins to twist when maturation begins. In the transplanted ones I just see a beard of roots without a tap root and I think this is not able to provide the shoot with ample nutritions once it reaches a certain shoot/root ratio.
