Thistle is a sure sign of compaction, let them grow till you see flowers and mow short, they will not recover at this point. If cut or sprayed too early they will come right back. If you wait till the point of flowering but before seed set, you will not see them return because their deep tap root decomposes and alleviates the compaction which attracted them. I attached a pic from “When weeds talk” of which weeds are suppressed by crops.
