    1) See if you have a compaction layer. Can use a penetrometer or just a soil probe/rod. If so, that should probably be addressed before planting. Implement or cover crop.

    2) I would consider doing a basic soil analysis, although I know opinions differ on the value of that information. I’d do a Mehlich 3 and OM/Carbon analysis as a benchmark. Very cheap. If there are any huge issues, you can do something to address them before planting either in the tree row itself, or in the hole at planting.

    3) Consider the value of your time/resources for the compost addition/whether you have access to quality compost. A good cover crop blend, intended for your soil might be cheaper and easier.
