Some plants will react to disease pressure with an immune response. I believe the idea here is that the plant will sense the chitin in the insect frass and shed exoskeletons and react with the immune response, but I don’t believe that it actually would in real life. The best hope is the biology will ramp up that can digest chitin and attack plant pests before they have a chance to invade the crop.
