Thanks Julia! This is fascinating, and I can’t believe it’s the first time I’ve heard someone talk about inbreeding plants. We are not currently producing any of our own seeds. I have just assumed that breeders know a lot of the best practices…however like any business will take shortcuts for profit.

I have to imagine that some breeders are aware of inbreeding and have measures to limit the effects. We get most of our seeds from Johnny’s. Do you know if Johnny’s, Territorial, Kitazawa, Baker’s Creek, or Highmowing take measures to limit inbreeding effects? Are there any companies that you think have good practices?
