Start getting down broad spectrum micronutrient and some macro and plant growth hormone in the form of a good cold process kelp and fish hydrolysate. If the product doesn’t have a humic element always combine fertilizers with a labile carbon source. I also toss about a quart of black strap molasses per acre in there. You really want to get as much mineral nutrition as you can into next years budwood.
We just started doing late winter early spring vermicompost applications pre bud break with really excellent results. I check for sap flow before applying any compost or continuing kelp in the spring. Maybe someone with a better idea can chip in, this is just what I do/ been doing for a couple years.
