One species that could also be interspersed is horse-radish. I have seen some old farmers grow it in their orchards just around the trees, probably for gopher reasons. It is indestructible, but it has large leaves so I don’t know if it works with sprinklers. I think that the sprinkler would pass underneath and maybe even work better as it is shaded.
