Once you face leaky gut problems, the body will react with more and more intensity against more and more foods. So you will have to restrict to that intake material that your system can easily digest and absorb better than the distorted gut flora.
Currently I am looking into the broken endophyte consumption. The uptake of trace minerals of plants and in the human gut seem to have quite a few common features. For bacterial reduction of oxidized trace elements (here we look especially at manganese and iron with their redox-swings) bacterial reduction works best with an additional reductant and an electron transfer element. So if we have an unbroken, steady supply of endophytes (like B. subtilis capable of extracellular electron transfer) from a plant that has been cultivated in presence of humic substances (and taken them up) and mucoid material that gives the gut flora something to hang on to, the gut flora will supply many nutrients to the body.
If this line is broken (either antibiotic therapy or non-supply) you can try to restart it with mucus (like linseed or suchlike things) a reductant like ascorbic acid (best in small quantities from natural source), humic acids (here we get decent peat based products) and probiotics and an “endophyte-like” bacterially dominated replacement flora plus turmeric to build EZ water and keep bad guys in check. Here you can be pragmatic and take a B. subtilis, Lactobacilli dominated supplement (which probably has lost some feature during laboratory culture a wild bacterium has, but offers the safety of being screened) or puristic and collect the herbs a la M. Bruce (valerian flower, dandelion flower, chamomile flower, nettle herb, oak BARK and Achillea, dried), start them daily (a small pinch in non-chlorinated water, with a bit of honey or lactose) and consume them daily for a period of time (or better, use them as intended as garden amendment for composting and consume it via your harvest). I have never seen such a bacterial diversity in one spot than with this herbal material. Check for good hygiene of your jug, begin to consume after two hours of incubation and do not stand longer than 24 hrs.
It is incredible at what speed skin conditions respond and esp. fungal issues react if the gut flora is reinstalled with this “functional kit”. Also usually the tolerance for input material is increasing – do not be impatient, leave the body a period to restore the gut lining before indulging into something you could not have for a long time – do not start with the heavy loads of meat, fat plus sugary desert. Go slow and train your new buddies step by step and keep breaks between. It is like starting out a new fermenter. Slow gradual introduction of new material. If autoimmune disease has set in, the immune system takes half a year to two years to “forget” its targets. I personally do not think that the modern diet is particularly ideal for human health, but it is convenient to be able to cope with gluten as it is so omnipresent.
My personal view of the fructose issue is that it can favor organisms in the gut that should not be dominant and in places where they should not be and such they will cause systemic trouble – indigestion, malnutrition and inflammatory or autoimmune disease when the immune system tries to eliminate these guys but is mislead to the body s own structures. Apparently these conditions are worsened with mineral imbalances.
