I have worked with a few growers in KY (who are not in the internet), who would grow diverse cover crops, and cut them with a haybine several days before planting. Some crops they would plant into the swath of mulch, some crops they would plant between the swaths of mulch. They would vary depending on the time of year and the crop. I expect planting into the mulch would be the most effective weed control zone.
