I’ve been smelling lots of soils this year too, and training the kids to do the same. I always find that soils with a growing crop give me a tingle, I guess that’s something we are hard wired to recognise. I’ve pondered whether we can sense/smell root exudates as I’ve certainly noticed that different roots have a different smell. I’ve wondered, if that’s possible, then can we identify different exudates and biology through the sense of smell? I imagine a well trained dog or pig could!
