Fascinating and informative sharing and discussion. I am not experienced managing orchards, but it is in my near future, so thank you all. I wonder if the trefoil family is another legume option for a mix? At least Birdsfoot trefoil is noted for being high in condensed tannins, which is helpful for grazing ruminants in reducing internal parasite pressure. I wonder if it might make them less palatable to gophers, squirrels, and our version in the NE US: woodchuck. Or it may make for a much healthier large rodent population……. There are tremendous varieties of turf/dwarf grass species that would seem useful, to go along with some of the many other suggestions.
