Have you thought about trying boron as a desiccant? I have no experience with it on grain crops, but I understand it to be an excellent way to naturally cause a plant to senesce. We used it successfully in almonds to cause the hull to mature quickly and dry down so that when we shook the trees all the nuts fell off uniformly.
