The dilemma with no dig potatoes is that in a damp climate like the uk or ireland slugs will destroy them unless you use compost mulch, using compost mulch however is wasteful of resources and causes nutrient excesses which will limit your climbing to higher levels of the plant health pyramid.

My vote is to do the tillage and mitigate the damage, too much dogma in no dig and not enough discussion of the agronomic implications of the over application of compost.
