Silvopasture in the USA: A systematic review of natural resource professional and producer-reported benefits, challenges, and management activities

Silvopasture deliberately combines trees, forage and livestock in one managed system. A systematic review led by USDA Forest Service researchers examined 53 US studies published between 1983 and 2021 to understand how farmers were using the practice, what benefits they reported and what prevented wider adoption.

What producers valued

Income diversification and shade for livestock were among the most frequently identified benefits. Trees can produce timber, nuts, fruit or other products while sheltering animals and changing the pasture microclimate. In a well-designed system, livestock can also manage vegetation and cycle nutrients.

The review shows that silvopasture is an active grazing system, not simply livestock placed in unmanaged woodland. Most of the documented systems used rotational or management-intensive grazing, and many combined wooded areas with open paddocks. This allowed managers to move animals according to forage supply, tree protection and seasonal conditions.

The largest barrier was knowledge

Lack of practical information was a recurring challenge. Tree species and spacing, forage response to shade, livestock behaviour, fencing, water, establishment cost and the long time horizon for trees all require planning. A design that works in one region may not suit another.

The survey evidence was nevertheless encouraging: most participating producers intended to continue using silvopasture. The review also identified research gaps, including the need for stronger economic data and better comparisons across climates and production systems.

For farmers considering the practice, the sensible starting point is a clear objective and a small, monitored trial. Advice from agroforestry, forestry, pasture and livestock specialists can help avoid decisions that are difficult to reverse once trees are established.
