UNCOVERING BEST PRACTICES FOR COVER CROPS TO OPTIMIZE CROP PRODUCTION

The management choices

What the trials found

Across two Pennsylvania sites over three years, the team tested cereal rye seeding and nitrogen rates alongside termination timing. Researcher Heidi Reed reported that growers in similar climates could reduce rye seeding to 34 kilograms per hectare, apply 34 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare and maintain soybean yield while receiving the soil-moisture benefits of planting green.

Use the result as a starting point

The rates are a result from a defined climate, soil and rotation, not a universal prescription. Rainfall, rye growth, planting equipment, soil nitrogen and the intended cover-crop function can change the best treatment. Small field comparisons can help growers find the lowest seeding and nitrogen rates that still meet their goals.
