Loss of Soil Carbon / Organic Matter
Julia and Brian, thank you for your responses.
I had not done the numbers that you put together Brian. They would definitely take some achieving and maintaining.
It is a relatively high biological input situation. We use compost and a lot of biological input through the irrigation. It is an orchard situation, so we have plenty of opportunity to…

Looking to drive a bit of growth into autumn here in the UK
Any tips gratefully received, -

Loss of Soil Carbon / Organic Matter
Hi Rowan, sampling variability (sample depth, in-field variability, etc) could be an issue, but if you are running a lot of samples and seeing consistent results then that doesn’t fully explain it. Another common culprit is switching soil labs but I’ll assume that’s not the case.
If I had to guess I would say at 0.4% OM increase per year what…

Loss of Soil Carbon / Organic Matter
Hi Rowan, great job building soil organic matter over the years! my basic understanding is that carbon is a cycle, and if you’re measuring the humate form of carbon, it will go up and down according to plants & microbes cycling carbon like depositing/withdrawal (to put it in terms of a bank account). I don’t know the science of it well enough,…

Loss of Soil Carbon / Organic Matter
Over the past 10 years we have gradually built our soil organic matter up from around 1.9% to an average of 6%. The organic Carbon level rose from 1.1% to over 3%. We have seen gradual increases each year.
However over the last 12 months we have seen a drop back to 4% organic matter across all testing sights. This seems to be a massive drop…
