Thanks Harriot for your comments on the different slugs. I have a tendency to think a slugs is a slug, but it is definitely the small gray Deroceras that is causing most of my problems – they sneak inside and nibble on the midrib exactly as you describe it. I will definitely be more precise in looking to see what slugs are causing what damage!

Hi Angus, this is only anecdotal but myself and others in Iowa have noticed that sunn hemp in a multispecies mix seems to attract a lot of attention from insects, particularly beetles. We are using it in an interseed mix with corn, and the sunn hemp seems to reduce pest pressure on the corn.

The crutch you need depends which problem you want to solve. If you select your own deep rooting lettuces and aim for good structure and nutrition, you will get to head maturity under most conditions (plus if you care for predatory beetles/fireflies, so that there is a low initial density).
