If there are heavy metals present in soil, and your soil has high OM, do the bacteria break down the metals or reduce them to less harmful forms or does the plant release acids to prevent uptake? Or both? If the heavy metals are present but not being used by the plants, will they accumulate?

Our little microscopic friends in EM (Effective Microorganisms) will do the job for you if you ask them (and of course don’t forget to actually apply them to the soil)
