If you look at where grapevines inhabit spaces in nature they actually climb trees and exist between the understory and the canopy of larger trees. There are some old vineyards in Georgia where the vines are essentially trellised up trees, but that seems like it would not be an economic way to grow wine grapes.

Companion planting in the row is such an interesting topic. I imangine finding the right companions that would fill a different niche than the cash crop would be crucial to success. As well as knowing what weeds and pests are problematic in your fields. Are there any resources out there for determining the grouping of different crop families?
